Natural deodorants are a safe and healthy option for keeping our pits fresh and happy. But do you know what’s in them? Let’s explore some common ingredients found in natural deodorants and how they help to kick odour to the curb.

Beeswax

Beeswax is incredibly versatile and has some super beneficial natural properties, making it a great addition to many beauty and personal care products. When added to natural deodorants, beeswax helps to form the other ingredients together, creating a creamy and smooth texture.1 So you could say it’s the glue that keeps natural deodorant together.

When used on its own, beeswax can help with easing symptoms of skin conditions like eczema.1 Versatility at its finest!

Sodium Bicarbonate (Bicarb Soda)

Bicarb soda is a household staple that’s used in many natural deodorant products due to its odour-busting ability. It works by raising the PH levels in your underarms, which creates an environment that odour-causing bacteria struggle to survive in. Take that, B.O!

Cornstarch

Cornstarch is another common member of the kitchen pantry, coming from the starchy portion of corn kernels. Its main use is as a thickening agent in many recipes, giving your favourite marinade its beautiful texture. However, we use a very small amount in No Pong to assist with absorption. Our cornstarch (in No Pong) is Australian-made and is also non-GMO.

You can also use cornstarch in homemade remedies to help soothe sunburns and other skin rashes.2

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is possibly the most versatile ingredient in natural deodorants, with known uses from head to toe. Its moisturising properties are its strong suit, used for everything from scalp conditioner to body oil.

It’s used in No Pong as a base/carrier ingredient that helps the other ingredients blend together nicely, into a smooth and creamy texture.3

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a calming and moisturising ingredient derived from the nuts of the shea tree. Many cosmetic products utilise this impressive ingredient, mostly used for its moisturising effects and thick, smooth texture.4

We use it in our Vegan natural deodorant range to help create a smooth texture and feel on your skin.

Essential Oils

Essential oils have naturally pleasant scents and calming effects, making them popular amongst health-aware users worldwide.5 As a result, they’ve made their way into an array of products, from candles to body oils and other beauty products. So it’s no surprise that essential oils are a key ingredient in natural deodorants as well.

We use a small amount of pure 100% certified organic essential oils in our No Pong formulas. Used purely for their lovely and often subtle scent. You’ll usually find essential oils like Vanilla, Orange Sweet, Lemongrass, Ylang Ylang, Cedarwood and Frankincense as common ingredients in natural deodorants, all of which are found in No Pong. Leaving questionable fragrance chemicals behind and opting for a natural alternative is a huge plus for our bodies and our environment.

So how should you choose which natural deodorant is right for you?

When choosing which products to try, your first port of call should be to check the ingredients list on the brand’s website. Then, do your own research to decide if you want to use that product. If you’re unsure how you may be affected by a particular ingredient, please reach out to the brand, your doctor or a skin specialist.
